Nobel laureate appointed honorary professor at Chinese university

TIANJIN, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Frances Hamilton Arnold, who won the 2018 Nobel Prize in chemistry, was hired as an honorary professor of Tianjin University in north China's Tianjin Municipality on Wednesday.

Frances Hamilton Arnold shared a science talk with more than 500 students and teachers of Tianjin University.

She introduced how directed evolution was used to engineer useful biological systems such as enzymes. She said these enzymes were designed to produce renewable fuels and pharmaceutical compounds with less harm to the environment.

"We are delighted to see Professor Arnold as our honorary professor, and we also welcome more talents to join the faculty team," said Li Jiajun, Party secretary of Tianjin University.

Jay Siegel, dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology at Tianjin University, said "We really appreciate Frances' coming. She is a wonderful role model for all of us here. It's not only about her academic achievement, but her background, international experience, openness and passion for what she loves."

Arnold currently works for the California Institute of Technology, and she will cooperate further with Tianjin University in the future.
