Old Streets in Chongqing

2019-10-31 10:40:21

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Chongqing's unique Ba culture, immigration customs and anti-Japanese culture left many different styles of buildings and blocks for the city. Today, we will take you through the old streets of Chongqing and recall the gentle years of this city.

Jialing Xicun

Jialing Xicun is located on the Shancheng Footpath next to Shangqingsi Post Office. It is a street reflecting the characteristics of old residents of the mountain city. The glory of Jialing Xicun comes from the "Democracy House" established in Xianying's former residence during the anti-Japanese war.

In the present Jialing Xicun, the houses are just like a flat stone path and tree-lined, with red floor tiles, steel plate flowers painted with landscape of old Chongqing and beautiful telegraph boxes.

Historical sites such as Xianying's former residence and Marshall Mansion have also been well renovated and utilized.

Datong Street

Since the Qing Dynasty, Datong Street has been famous for its bronze handicraft industry. There were more than 100 copper shops on both sides of the street.

During the period of the Republic of China, Datong Street and its surrounding streets concentrated Chongqing Branch of Bank of Communications, headquarters of Chuankang Bank, headquarters of Juxingcheng Bank, Chuanyan Bank, Hecheng Bank, etc. Therefore, Datong Street is also known as "China's Wall Street during the Anti-Japanese War".

Until now, the two buildings of China Construction Bank (the former site of Bank of Communications) and post office (the former site of Chuankang Civilian Commercial Bank) are still in good condition.

Kuaizi Street

Kuaizi Street is only 100 meters away from the famous Luohan Temple. About its origin, it is said that there was a pond opposite Chang'an Temple (Chongqing No. 25 Middle School). If you dropped chopsticks made of bamboo or wood into the pond, they would sink to the bottom of the water, so it is named as “Kuaizi Street”.

Later, people in Kuaizi Street spread the word about chopstick culture, and shops here started selling chopsticks.

Today, its narrow slate roads have been replaced by asphalt road, and old shops here have been replaced by various Chongqing hotpot shops, Wanzhou barbecue shops...

It has become a food street with Chongqing characteristics and a good place for "foodies".

Yanziyan Old Street

Yanziyan Old Street, facing the Yangtze River, the back of the Pipa Mountain, as if hanging between the hillside.

It is the Nanqu Road under the steep cliff. One end of it is followed by the Nanqu Park, now Zourong Park, and the other end is connected with the back street of Pipa Mountain.

Although narrow and dark, it is now one of the places with old Chongqing flavor. (Translated by Luo Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
