2019-11-08 14:56:37

Celebrities’ residences and old buildings spreading all Zhongshan 4th Road Area

How many celebrities’ residences and historical sites are there? According to the Draft, there are over 40 immovable cultural heritages, historical buildings and traditional buildings, including 7 important heritage sites under state protection, 5 heritage sites under municipal and district protection and over 20 traditional buildings (including 5 sites planned to be under protection).

The 7 important heritage sites under state protection include Teyuan, Guiyuan, former Chongqing Office of the Eighth Route Army of South Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, former Executive Yuan of National Government and three sites formed in Chongqing Negotiations. The 2 heritage sites under municipal protection include former Residence of Li Zongren and former Residence of Zhang Xiang; and the three heritage sites under district protection include former Residence of Dai Li, former Dormitory of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Area Cadre Children School and former Residence of Pan Wenhua.

The Kuomintang Police Station is also an immovable heritage site that has not been approved and announced as one of the heritage sites under protection. The Police Station, built in the 1940s, is adjacent to the former Zhou Enlai’s Residence and has been renovated into Zengjiayan Academy, which has become a popular spot for tourists. After renovation, the three-storey building in Chinese and western style looks very impressive. It has gable and hip roof, two dormers at north and south sides, Chinese-style tiles on roof and traditional Chinese walls and dark green tiles facing the street.

The former Residence of Zhang Xiang is a pseudo-gothic style building behind the China Telecom business hall, which can be seen from the Shangqingsi Pedestrian Overpass. Built in the 1930s, it was originally an office building of the Central Party Office of the Kuomintang, and later owned by Mr. Zhang Xiang, who is known as the "telecom legend" of Chongqing. According to Yuzhong Cultural Relics Management Administration, the Residence was one of the most luxurious gardens in Chongqing at that time. The whole residence adopted the western residential space layout model with fireplace in the center. Besides, it also introduced the western style sunlight room.

Four century-old streets and alleys

The Shangqingsi, where Zhongshan 4th Road is located, flourished during the Anti-Japanese War when the National Government moved here. According to the Photography and Video Exhibition of “One Hundred Years of Shangqingsi”, Shangqingsi was still a suburb in the Qing Dynasty and the first highway from Tongyuanmen to Zengjiayan, which is commonly known as the "central trunk road", was built until Pan Wenhua became the mayor. In the Draft, the four traditional streets and alleys includes one main street (namely Zhongshan 4th Road) and three footpaths: footpath from Zengjiayan to Renmin Road, footpath from Zengjiayan to Jiabin Road and trail Jialing Dongcun, among which the Zhongshansi Road was built in the end of 1920s, the footpath from Zengjiayan to Renmin Road was built during 1950s-1960s and the trail of Jialing Dongcun was build 1930s-1940s.

There are also three protective courtyards in the Draft, including the courtyard of former Dormitory of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Area Cadre Children School, the courtyard of Guiyuan and the courtyard of former Residence of Dai Li. In addition to rich historical cultural relics and remains, the ficus virens on both sides of the main street is also a beautiful landscape. According to the Draft, there are about 261 ficus virens with a diameter of 30cm or more in the area. (Translated by Chen Yue, Fathom Language Limited)
