CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Green brick archway, foreign-style buildings of various shapes, ficus virens with canopy like umbrella... After two-year renovation and maintenance, the buildings in the west area of Ma'an Mountain Traditional Scenic Area, located behind the People's Auditorium in Yuzhong District, have been completely repaired and renovated!

Old Chongqing flavor in the old yard

There are many streets and lanes in Zaozi Lanya Area, Yuzhong District, which is a typical old urban area of Chongqing. To the north of Zaozi Lanya, there is a small mountain fort. It is high at both ends and low in the middle, seeming like a saddle. That is Ma'an Mountain.

Although it is called Ma'an Mountain, it is not high. Entering Ma'an Mountain from Zaozi Lanya Centre Street, you need to pass a gentle slope. The highest part of the scenic area is near a precipice, and the vertical distance to the Auditorium Platform on the north side is about tens of meters. It's like a forgotten little village without external disturbance, hidden in the bustling city, and it's the best place to get quiet.

Standing in a newly built loft similar to the viewing platform in the scenic area, you can not only see the Three Gorges Museum, but also the dome of the auditorium close to you.

The main building in the scenic area has been completed, and the construction workers are beautifying the landscape around the building. Red doors and windows, stone railings, small buildings with green bricks and black tiles... When you shuttle in the streets, a sense of comfort and nostalgia make you unwilling to leave. 

The Ma'an Mountain Traditional Scenic Area is divided into the East and the West. The West Area is mainly for protection and repair, hazard relief and environmental renovation, with a building area of 7034 square meters. The East Area is an underground garage. According to Yuzhong District, the buildings in the West Area have been completely repaired, and now the environmental landscape is under construction, about 85% of which has been completed.

Foreign buildings witnessed the history of the Anti-Japanese War

In the renovation and maintenance of Ma'an Mountain Traditional Scenic Area, it is proposed to restore the historical and cultural features of "green bricks and black tiles, green trees and red walls", and keep the original street space and architectural features.

There are six cultural and conservation buildings in the western area, covering a building area of 1917 square meters, including Shen Junru’s Former Residence, a well-known municipal cultural relics protection unit.

Different from other foreign buildings in the scenic area, the exterior walls of Shen Junru's Former Residence and the courtyard next to it are mainly bright yellow, which is particularly conspicuous.

You may not know that No. 28 and No. 29 Ma'anshan close to Shen Junru's Former Residence, together with Shen Junru's Former Residence, are the most unique and conspicuous old buildings in the scenic area, and they once belonged to the same owner. According to records, the three buildings are the self-built properties of Li Zhengquan, the manager of Chongqing Jiuyu Bank in 1938. From old to young, they were named "Liangzhuang", "Xiaodi" and "Houlu" respectively with the name of his three sons, Li Zhongliang, Li Zhongxiao and Li Zhonghou. The buildings were all in the shape of the character "Gong", and "Houlu" was Shen Junru's Former Residence. During the Anti-Japanese War, Shen Junru lived here for a long time.

"Liangzhuang" was the former site of the foreign affairs group of the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee during the Anti Japanese War, and Wang Bingnan served as the director. At that time, in order to facilitate their work, the Foreign Affairs Group rented them in the name of Wang Bingnan and Wang Anna.

According to the relevant person in charge of Yuzhong District, Ma'an Mountain used to be the place where Shen Junru, Shi Liang, Li Gongpu, Wang Bingnan, Wang Anna, Mao Dun, Sha Qianli and other famous people lived and participated. It was also an important place for the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee with Zhou Enlai as secretary to meet, and discuss with democratic parties and progressive democrats.

When the renovation and maintenance of Ma'an Mountain Traditional Scenic Area was started, the relevant person in charge of it introduced to the reporter that Ma'an Mountain Traditional Scenic Area will be organically integrated with the existing People's Auditorium and Chongqing Three Gorges Museum, to realize the open block shared by the host and the guest, and to build a historical and cultural display window.
