CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Recently, a reporter from Chongqing Evening News learned from Yuzhong District that previously, of the 130th Batch of Historic Buildings Protection Lists announced by the city, 6 old buildings in Yuzhong District were on the list. The six old buildings include the humble blockhouses in residential buildings, pavilions and theaters in leisure parks for more than half a century.
What do these old buildings look like? What kind of stories are behind them? Recently, the reporter visited some historical buildings on the spot.
A blockhouse hidden under a residential building
The six old buildings on the list include the blockhouse in Pipashan Centre Street. It is hidden in the residential building of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Hospital. Due to the long history and the gradual loss of function, most of the surrounding residents have no impression of the blockhouse. So it took a lot of trouble for the reporter to find it.
The blockhouse is located on a small platform between two old residential buildings. The main entrances of the two residential buildings come in and out from the foot of Pipashan Centre Street. The small platform has a separate small iron gate to enter and exit, and there is a tall ficus virens tree next to it. Standing on the platform, in front of the Yangtze River, despite the foggy days, Shanhuba and Caiyuanba Yangtze River Bridge are still clearly visible.
“The location of the stone blockhouse is located on one of the high points of Pipa Mountain. Although many high-rise buildings are around it, you can still overlook the Yangtze River and Shanhuba there.” The relevant person in charge of Yuzhong District told the reporter that the main defense range of this block was mainly from Pipashan Centre Street to Guanyinyan section. It was mainly used to protect Shanhuba Airport as a military defense fortress during the Anti-Japanese War.
There is also a Hongxing Pavilion in the Cultural Palace
In the minds of most “old Chongqing people”, the Hongxing Pavilion generally refers to the “one” located in Pipa Mountain Park, which used to be one of the ideal places for many Chongqing people to climb high and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountain city. However, there is also a Hongxing Pavilion in the Cultural Palace, which is located on the Laohudong in the northwest corner of the Cultural Palace.
The Hongxing Pavilion was built in the 1950s, and was built at about the same time as the Working People’s Cultural Palace. In the early stage of construction, a fountain was also built opposite the Hongxing Pavilion, which was later demolished to become a leisure square. In the 1990s, the top of the pavilion, the pillars and the floor tiles were completely restored. Except for the main plastering, the structure remained basically unchanged, retaining the appearance of the year.
Although the Hongxing Pavilion has gone through half a century, it still looks solemn and elegant. Exquisite carvings are also clearly visible on the eight pillars supporting the pavilion.
A date at the Cultural Palace Grand Theatre
In the early 1950s, the Culture Palace, then the Chongqing People's Auditorium, and Datianwan Stadium became the three landmark buildings in Chongqing. The six old buildings on this list also include the Cultural Palace Grand Theater in the Culture Palace, which was once known as the four major theaters in Chongqing with Cathay, Shancheng and Xiangyang.
After more than half a century, the Cultural Palace Grand Theater is still in operation. The Cultural Palace Grand Theater was originally called the Cultural Palace Movie Theater. After the renovation in 1998, the hardware facilities of the Grand Theater reached the domestic advanced level. It has long undertaken domestic and international cultural and artistic exchange activities, and has always been an important performance venue and elegant art activity center in our city.
When it comes to the Cultural Palace Grand Theater, going to a movie was one of the first choices for leisure and young people to date at that time. The reporter once interviewed Mr. Xiao, a retired member of the CPPCC in Yuzhong District. According to Mr. Xiao, after the opening of the Cultural Palace, going to the Cultural Palace Movie Theatre is the first choice for young men and women to date. For a long time, you can go to the Cultural Palace to watch an open-air movie for only five cents. “At dusk, there are old people and children holding small benches to occupy seats in the Cultural Palace Square.” (Translated by Luo Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
