KUNMING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- More than 40,000 black-headed gulls have arrived in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, for this year's wintering, according to the local forestry department Sunday.

A total of 40,800 black-headed gulls have been detected this year in over 60 habitats in the city, and the number of the birds has stabilized at around 40,000 in recent years, the department said.

This year's record-high number reflects the improving ecological environment of Kunming over the past 30-plus years after only a few thousand were spotted in the 1980s, said Zhao Xuebing, secretary-general of the Kunming Ornithological Society.

The red-billed oceanic birds migrate through Siberia and other regions during winter to Kunming. The species typically gather in flocks.
