Bolivia's election body approves electoral calendar

2020-01-06 09:19:41

LA PAZ, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Bolivia's Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) on Sunday approved a procedural calendar for a new round of general elections on May 3, said the TSE's president Salvador Romero.

The calendar specifies that a runoff will be held 45 days later if no candidate wins the first round by garnering 50 percent or more of the votes, or 40 percent of the votes with a 10-point lead over the runner-up.

"We are working to provide the people certainty of a transparent process," Romero told reporters at a press conference.

The TSE has revised the voter roster, he said, adding that votes "will be counted scrupulously."

"The main activity for citizens is the process of registering ... in the voter roster. That activity is going to take place two weeks from now," said Romero.

Voter registration will begin on Jan. 18 and continue for nine days, he said.

Political parties are expected to register their candidates for president, vice president and legislative seats by the end of this month.

Bolivia was plunged into political turmoil after the opposition rejected the reelection of Evo Morales to a 4th term in the October elections, leading Morales to resign and go to Mexico, where he was offered asylum. He has then relocated to Argentina.
