HARBIN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The annual passenger throughput of Harbin, China's "ice city" in the northeast, reached nearly 20.8 million, up 1.7 percent year on year, according to Taiping International Airport, the city's only airport.

In 2019, the airport continuously optimized its network layout, opening direct flights to Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and many other destinations.

Founded in 1979, the airport now operates 201 domestic and overseas air routes linking 113 cities.

Harbin has gained international attention for its increasingly popular winter extravaganza, which features massive, elaborate ice sculptures, competitions and winter sports.
