RABAT, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Morocco foiled on Thursday an attempt to smuggle seven tons of cannabis at the border post of Guergarat, with Mauritania, Moroccan police said in a statement.
The banned substance was concealed in products and goods intended for export to an African country, inside a Morocco-registered truck, the statement added.
The truck's driver was arrested and remanded in police custody, it said.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
