Anti-epidemic diary: “They love my cartoons”

2020-03-13 12:02:38

A painting by Yu Xiaoqin to cheer up the elderly

While seeing Yu Xiaoqin’s painting, the elderly patient knew it was time to take medicine

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- “Unconsciously, our medical team has been in Wuhan for 19 days. With the reasonable management of the leaders and the sincere cooperation of the team, we have formulated a detailed work procedure and scheduling system, so that our work in Wuhan can be carried out quickly and orderly, and the treatment work became easier.”

It’s hard to understand the dialect.

However, there was still a little thing that bothered me a lot. That was communication. In the No. 14 Ward which we were responsible for, most of the patients were elderly people. Many of them could not speak Mandarin, and it was not easy to listen to Mandarin. Some can’t even read. We can’t understand the dialect spoken by the elderly people. Some of them were at loss when we spoke Mandarin. In addition, the protective clothing we wear was a little cumbersome, so that the elderly people sometimes didn’t understand the gesture.

The first time I gave medicine to granny Huang of Bed No.13, I found that I couldn’t understand what she said. Her hearing was not very good either. I told her to drink 10ml syrup three times a day, but she shook her head for a long time. In the end, I had to turn to Aunt Ma in the same hospital as an interpreter. After talking about it for a long time, the effect was still not good.

Childlike smile

Every time I got off work, I wondered how to communicate effectively with these patients. After gestures and writing were not good for communication, I thought of drawing. It worked pretty well. I brought cartoon pictures the next day, which were simple and clear. When I communicate with her, she understood it quickly after seeing the cartoons.

Grandpa Zhang was a patient with poor nutrition. When the doctor checked the room, he told me that the old man should strengthen nutrition by drinking more milk and eating more.

When I was delivering breakfast to Grandpa two days ago, I often found that he didn’t eat much and unwilling to talk to us. Later, I took the cartoon picture to show to him and told him: Grandpa, you need to eat more to get better. I’ll see if you have finished later. He saw that I was so serious, and drew pictures to remind him, showing a childlike smile.

Grandparents like my cartoons. Grandpa Zhang realized our concern for him. In recent days, he really tried to eat as much as possible. He also talked to us a lot, and his mood was much better.

Until the flowers flourish

We have a famous saying — Sometimes cure, often help, and always comfort. During the outbreak of the epidemic, the elderly living in the sick area could not be accompanied by their families, and they would feel depressed. We medical staff are their guardians and should give them more care and warmth.

Through effective communication, we trust each other, get closer to each other, and psychologically build the confidence for them to heal.

During this period, more and more patients were discharged from the hospital, and many severe patients were transferred to the general ward. We gradually saw the dawn of comprehensive victory.

I hope that all the old people here will recover and enjoy the cherry blossom when flowers bloom all over the mountains! (Translated by Luo Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
