U.S. Texas to further reopen economy

2020-05-06 09:25:39

HOUSTON, May 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday announced plans to further reopen the state's economy, with hair salons and gyms to welcome customers.

During a press briefing, Abbott said hair salons and barbershops are allowed to open starting May 8 with limits including 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) distance between clients and masks for customers and stylists.

Besides, Abbott allowed gyms to open starting May 18, also with conditions, such as 25 percent capacity, 6 feet social distancing, disinfecting surfaces, and closure of gym showers and locker rooms. Everyone is advised to wear a face mask if possible.

Just as restaurants and malls, hair salons and gyms can reopen, but not required, said Abbott.

Last Friday, restaurants, malls and movie theaters in Texas were allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity and with social distancing as part of Abbott's first phase of reopening the state's business. Beaches and state parks were also reopened.

According to official figures, as of Tuesday, Texas has seen over 33,000 COVID-19 cases, including more than 900 deaths.
