Spain inching towards post-pandemic "new normality"

2020-06-09 09:30:46

MADRID, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Spain took a further step on Monday towards "new normality" after the coronavirus pandemic with all of the country seeing a further relaxation of the anti-virus lockdown measures.

Spain's progress out of the lockdown continues to be 'asymmetrical' -- some regions are progressing faster than the others -- as explained by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez when he announced the government's four-phase plan to ease the measures on April 28.

"Phase zero" was the preparation phase. "Phase one" saw the initial relaxation of measures, while "Phases two and three," each lasting a minimum of two weeks, continued the de-confinement.

On Monday, 52 percent of Spaniards moved into the final "Phase three". They live in the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Murcia, Extremadura, Galicia, Cantabria, the Basque Region, Navarra, the Canary and Balearic Islands and parts of Catalonia.

Meanwhile, the regions of Madrid, Castilla-Leon and the Barcelona metropolitan area progressed into "Phase two."

In "Phase two," bars and restaurants can open their interior, serving at between 30 percent and 50 percent of their capacity to ensure that social distancing measures are still observed. Commercial centers can open their doors and restrictions on when people can exercise outside are lifted.

"Phase three" sees an increase in the number of people allowed inside bars, restaurants and shops. Sunbathing is permitted on beaches and discos and nightclubs can reopen with a limited capacity. Navarra and the Canary and Balearic Islands have chosen to delay the reopening.

In this last phase, the autonomous communities manage their own de-confinement measures and people can leave their provinces for the first time since March 15. However, the central government still controls movement between the communities. This restriction will only be lifted when the sixth extension of the State of Alarm expires on June 21.

Sanchez confirmed on Sunday that his cabinet will adopt the regulations for the period after June 22 at its weekly meeting on Tuesday. After that, Spaniards will experience the 'new normality' of their lives.

According to health authorities, Spain has so far reported 241,550 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 27,136 people have lost their lives. Enditem
