COLOMBO, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka issued a "red notice" on Thursday to several districts of the country over thundershowers followed by severe lightning in the coming days and cautioned people to avoid being outdoors.

The Meteorology Department in its latest weather update said the warning was issued for 15 districts in the Eastern, North-central, Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces of the island country.

Heavy falls of more than 75 mm could be expected at some places in the areas and there may be temporary localized strong winds during thunderstorms in the coming days, the department warned.

People have been advised to seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. They have also been advised to avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, playgrounds and open water bodies during thunderstorms.

"Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms. Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats. Beware of fallen trees and power lines," the department said. Enditem
