Rising scorching heat near 40 degree Celsius

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- According to the Chongqing Meteorological Press Conference of August 2020, the average temperature in August is relatively high. Periodical high temperature occurs quite often and the extreme heat in plain area and basins can reach 40-42℃, with days that the temperature above 35℃ amount to 10-22 in a month in most areas of Chongqing. The good news is that moderate and heavy rain is expected in main areas of Chongqing this weekend, with intense fall in local area. 

The average precipitation from May to July in Chongqing reaching record high

From May 1 to July 31, the average amount of precipitation in the whole municipality was 746.9mm, an increase of 44.8% and 39.3% of the same period in recent years (515.7mm) and previous year (536.3mm), breaking the record (695.6mm in 1998) since the meteorological record, according to Tan Chang, vice director and news spokesmen of Chongqing Meteorological Service.

During this period, there were 11 torrential rain events, among which June 20 and June 27 reached heavy degree and July 15 and July 25 extremely heavy degree. Rainstorm of July 15 was the strongest event ever this year. The amount of torrential rains events was 2.2 and 1.4 times of those in the same period of recent years (5 events) and the previous year (8 events).

In August, Chongqing is dominated by sunny, hot and rainless weather, with rainfall expected this weekend

According to Zhou Guobing, head of Chongqing Meteorological Service, the average temperature in August is relatively high; periodical high temperature occurs quite often and the extreme heat in plain area and basins can reach 40-42℃, with days that the temperature above 35℃ amount to 10-22 in a month in most areas of Chongqing. There will be 2 to 3 local torrential rain events in the last ten-day of August and the first ten-day of September. Due to the high risk of rainstorm, flashfloods and geological disasters, the public need to strengthen prevention.

Chongqing Meteorological Service has issued orange-coded heat alert in consecutive days. In fact, in August, Chongqing is dominated by sunny, hot and rainless weather. The reason for some citizens’ feeling about the rapid heating is the rainy days that caused relatively low temperatures in June and July.
