CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Next to the Fotuguan Station of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2, there is a memorial wall with the handprints of Chongqing rail transit builders. On this memorial wall, the handprints of 322 representatives of Line 2 builders are gathered here, including the handprint of Gao Chao, the general manager of Fourth Company of Construction Management Center Project of Chongqing Railway Transit Group.

These handprints marked the starting button of Chongqing Rail Transit.

Creating something from scratch

Construction difficulties of Mountain City solved by Line 2

In 2001, as a key project in the West China Development, the construction of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 already began. Gao Chao, who was just seconded to the Line 2 project from another company, became the site representative of the employer, responsible for the construction and management of the viaduct from Niujiaotuo to Daping.

Chongqing's Rail Transit is developing rapidly now, but the construction of the first line was not easy.

In 1988, the Chongqing Municipal Government started the preparatory work for the planning and construction of Chongqing Rail Transit. In 1992, the feasibility investigation project of it was launched. A team of experts from Chongqing went to Europe, America and Japan to learn from the experience and found that the straddled-type monorail was the most suitable system for transportation in Chongqing.

In December 2000, the construction of the first phase of Line 2 (Jiaochangkou-Dayancun) started officially.

However, numerous difficulties had to be overcome to complete this section. This is because the section from Liziba to Fotuguan was classified as a landslide-prone area by the geological community at that time, especially during the rainy season every year.

Monorail passing through building

A pity existed in Liziba Station

What came to Gao Chao’s mind was that Chongqing's rail transit would see rapid development. What he did not expect is that the rail transit is woven into a dense network of convenient travel for the public, and many Stations have also become popular scenic spots, including the bridge pier project of Liziba Station he was responsible for.

“Honestly, I would never have imagined before that the Liziba Station would become an attraction that hit the Internet,” Gao Chao said with a smile.

The CRT Line 2 trains pass through a residential building, making the building a Station and the Station a building. The unique Station-bridge separation design, coupled with the monorail’s superior vibration and noise reduction system, creates a unique Liziba Station.

“The Liziba Station was co-built with the developer, and we were responsible for the construction of the Station’s piers.” Gao Chao said that because of the topography and the terrain, the entire section from Niujiaotuo to Daping was built without a construction detour, making it extremely difficult to complete the erection of the track beams, let alone lay them into the commercial and residential buildings that were built at the same time.

In order to solve the problem that conventional vehicles could not be used to complete the lifting, builders of Chongqing Rail Transit independently developed the bridge erecting machine and girder transport vehicle adapted to the terrain to complete the paving of the section, which is now a popular tourist attraction.

Looking back on the construction of Liziba Station and seeing the bustling tourists downstairs, Gao Chao has a few more regrets, “If I had known that Liziba Station would become a popular attraction, it would have been better if I had put a little more thought into the construction in the first place.”

The “Green Forest” of Xiaolongkan Station, the “Chongqing Dialect” of Ciqikou Station, the “Time Tunnel” of Niujiaotuo Station, and the “Cultural Wall of 100-Year-Old Goods” of Lianglukou Station are all characteristic stations worth being visited. The murals in the stations at Xiejiawan and Olympic Sports Center on the Loop Line give the two stations, which were put into operation late last year, an artistic touch...

Witnessing the development

Chongqing Rail Transit increasing density and speeding up

From the formal operation of Line 2 in 2005 to today’s development idea of “increasing density in the center, speeding up the two troughs, connecting the two wings, and expanding the outlying areas”, Chongqing Rail Transit has accelerated the second and third phase of rail transit projects under construction and started the fourth phase of urban rail transit projects. Gao Chao has also been involved in projects such as Line 2 Phase 2, Line 3, Line 10 and the Loop Line.

As a first-generation rail transit builder, Gao Chao experienced the process of Chongqing Rail Transit from “learning from abroad” to “export” — localization and independent innovation from scratch. While promoting monorail construction, builders of Chongqing Rail Transit are vigorously advancing the standardization and industrialization of straddled-type monorail technology.

To date, Chongqing Rail Transit has opened a total of 9 lines, including Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, the Loop Line and Expo Branch Line. The operating mileage is 329 kilometers, covering the whole territory of the main urban districts, with average daily passenger traffic of nearly 3 million trips and the highest daily passenger traffic of 3.739 million trips.
