Internet buzzwords added to Chinese dictionary

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese internet buzzwords, such as "QR code" and "thumb-up," have been added to the latest edition of Xinhua Dictionary.

Apart from the new words, the newly-launched 12th edition of the dictionary has also tracked on expanded definitions for old words.

The Xinhua Dictionary, published by China's Commercial Press, was once recognized as the "most popular dictionary" and the "best-selling regularly updated book" by the Guinness World Records.

With a far-reaching influence in learning the Chinese language, the dictionary has sold more than 600 million copies globally since its first edition came out in the 1950s.

It was the first dictionary written in Mandarin Chinese, as opposed to the Classical Chinese widely used before the May Fourth Movement in 1919. Enditem
