Eling Park, Yuzhong District

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- This century-old park carries the memory of generations of Chongqing people. There are so many stories about spring outing of primary school students, romance of young people and enjoying the cool of old people, so it’s very easy to strike a chord. It is understood that Yuzhong District has started the improvement of the quality of Eling Park and will restore the historical spot after a hundred years in historical literature.

Every scenic spot of Eling Park has its own story

Eling Park is located in Fotuguan Mountain on the central ridge of Yuzhong Peninsula, formerly known as Liyuan (礼园) and Yiyuan (宜园). It was the Villa of Li Yaoting who was the First Chairman of Chongqing Chamber of Commerce in the late Qing Dynasty. It was built during 1909-1911.

As one of the most representative parks in Yuzhong District, it has a rich history and culture. There are 10 cultural relic protection units and cultural relic sites in the park, among which 2 are national-level cultural relic protection units.

For example, Tongxuan Stone Room, built in 1911, served as a place for Li Yaoting to cool off. It is said to be carved on the whole boulder, with window decoration in Chinese and Western style, and every place is not the same. On the stone walls inside the room, there are solar terms and all kinds of maps at that time.

Although Eling Park is not big, you can feel the cultural diversity from Eling Monument, Ronghu Lake, Shisheng Bridge, Feige Pavilion, Tongxuan Pavilion, Kansheng Building, Guangdao Garden and the sites of consular offices. Moreover, each site has a unique historical story.

Improve quality and restore historical artistic state to be a cultural landmark of Chongqing

In the next three years, Eling Park will be restored to its historical atmosphere and restored as a “cultural landmark of Chongqing that highlights its long history and local memory”. This year, Yuzhong District Urban Administration, in accordance with the key work deployment of the District Committee and Government, officially launched the park quality improvement and renovation work.

At present, the planning and design results have been made. The improvement mainly focuses on three parts, including leading the urban construction of mountain parks, creating a model of Bayu traditional gardens, and reflecting the history of Chongqing’s international exchanges.

The improved Eling Park is mainly divided into seven functional areas:

Firstly, Comprehensive Service Area at the Entrance, including the image display at the entrance of the park and the tourist service area, parking lots and other comprehensive service facilities;

Secondly, Diplomatic Reception Exhibition Area, with the embassy building as the highlight of the park, including Turkish Legation, Danish Legation and so on;

Thirdly, Garden Culture Exhibition Area, including the garden core area, park’s main axis, core waterscape and Sanyou Pavilion, Shengqiao Bridge and other important garden architecture;

Fourthly, Hero Culture Landscape Area, mainly about the Anti-Japanese War culture, including important monumental landmarks such as the Monument to the Revolution of 1911 and the Monument to the Soviet Army;

Fifthly, Lingshanganjiang Scenic Spot, located in the north of the park on the ridge of Eling, enjoying a good view of the river, and mainly engaged in viewing activities;

Sixthly, Future Functional Development Area, with calligraphy and painting academy, art museum and family area as the future functional development, to form a cultural and creative industry and park supporting supplement; and

Seventhly, Diplomatic Relations Cultural Activities Area, relying on the Yuegong Building, Kansheng Building and Guangdao Garden, serving as the main place for diplomatic cultural activities, leisure and exhibition.

Let’s wait and see the improvement effect of E'ling Park. (Translated by Liu Hongyan, Fathom Language Limited)
