KUNMING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of the plant Alocasia in southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to a research paper published in the journal Phytotaxa.

The researchers found the new species during an investigative trip to Tongbiguan Nature Reserve and named it Alocasia yunqiana.

The species is mainly distributed in tropical monsoon forests, roadsides and other habitats, said Liu Bing with the Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the authors of the study. It is presumed to be also distributed in Myanmar, he added.

There are 78 known species of Alocasia in the world, but there is still a lack of researches on the plant in the pan-Himalayan region, Liu said.

With the new species discovered, a total of nine species of Alocasia have been found in China, mostly distributed in southwest Yunnan Province. Enditem
