HOHHOT, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Droves of migratory birds have made stopovers at a north China wetland as they begin their journey southward to see out the winter.

More than 10,000 migratory birds have arrived at the Qagan Nur Wetland in Wushen Banner of Erdos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to the city's bureau of forestry and grassland.

"Since October, a large number of migratory birds have made stopovers in Erdos, and the wetlands in the city have become a favorite spot for swans and geese," said Zhang Chengbo, who helps with wildlife protection in Erdos.

Each year, beginning in October, migratory birds such as swans start flying south from Mongolia, and stay in Erdos for about a month, before flocking further southward.

Greater numbers and varieties of migratory birds have arrived at wetlands in Erdos year by year as local environment improves thanks to government efforts. Enditem
