CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Recently, an “8-story giant bookshelf wall” in Shapingba Three Gorges Square Business Circle Building, Chongqing went viral on the Internet, arousing comments from netizens. Why would such a huge bookshelf be built? What is the story behind the construction? The reporter came to Three Gorges Square to find the answer.

Nearly 60 “Chinese and foreign masterpieces” are placed on the “book shelf”.

There are eight shelves in all, the height of each book more than two meters

The outer wall on one side of the huge bookshelf is located in Shapingba Real Estate Registration Center Building. It has a height of 8 stories. It has nearly 60 books, with of height of more than 2 meters each, that can be distinguished as authentic. The types of books are also quite abundant, including domestic masterpieces such as the “Four Masterpieces”, The True Story of Ah Q, Call to Arms, and Wandering, as well as foreign masterpieces such as Robinson Crusoe and How the Heel is Tempered.

“This ‘book shelf’ seems to have been repaired for several years, right? I don’t know why there are so many people taking pictures and checking in these days!” Ms. Huang, who has been in a clothing store next to the “book shelf” for several years, said that when it was just repaired, there were also many citizens who come to take pictures. But after a long time, there were few people taking pictures.

Citizens stop to take pictures.

The “bookshelf” is not a new attraction

According to several nearby merchants, the “bookshelf” has existed for several years, but it has suddenly become popular online in recent days. Afterwards, the reporter contacted Cui Jie, Director of Shapingba Three Gorges Square Business Circle Management Committee. According to him, at the end of 2014, Shapingba District focused on transforming Three Gorges Square into a youthful, cultural, fashionable, and elegant business circle in the direction of “expanding and improving quality.

“When the exterior wall of this building was renovated, it was clearly proposed to increase the cultural elements of the business circle,” according to Cui Jie. After several discussions, it was finally decided to design its exterior facade to be a simple “huge bookshelf” with a height of 18.6m and a width of 3.12m, and nearly 60 Chinese and foreign masterpieces are placed. Citizens and tourists can see it when they look up while shopping, hoping to quietly convey Shaci cultural atmosphere to them. (Translated by Luo Juan, Fathom Language Limited)
