China promotes cultural heritage protection through public interest litigation

BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) recently published 10 typical public interest lawsuits, offering guidance for procuratorial organs to strengthen the protection of cultural relics and heritage based on existing policies and laws.

The cases show that procuratorial organs filed public interest litigations in keeping with the civil procedure law and administrative procedure law to punish tomb raiders and strengthen the protection of cultural heritage.

Handling such public interest litigations motivated the governments to shoulder their responsibilities of protecting cultural relics, said Hu Weilie, an SPP official, adding that public awareness on protection of cultural relics has also improved.

Hu noted that the SPP will deepen cooperation with legislatures and law enforcement authorities to keep strengthening the protection of cultural relics and heritage. Enditem
