CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On the afternoon of December 14, the news of “it snowed in Chongqing Jiefangbei” went viral on social media including Weibo and WeChat. In the video, the roofs of buildings in Jiefangbei are covered with snow, with snowflakes flying in the sky.

This rare snowfall in downtown Chongqing immediately drew the attention of the Internet users and many of them said they would leave for Jiefangbei for the snowscape. However, some on-site Internet users said that they didn’t see the snowfall and they believed that was fake news.

Chongqing Meteorological Service responded with a Weibo post, saying that the downtown temperature failed to form the conditions for a snowfall. The meteorological expert explained that a snowfall requires certain conditions: first, it requires ice crystals in the atmosphere; second, it requires enough moisture and a temperature under 4°C; and if these conditions can be met, there will be snowflakes in the sky. However, according to the real-time weather condition, the temperature of Fotuguan Station, the nearest Station to Jiefangbei, was 6.5°C, which was far from enough for Jiefangbei to snow.
