LUANSHYA, Zambia, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Mandarin Chinese is among the foreign languages being spoken in Zambia today, as some learning centers have since been established for people to turn up to learn the Chinese language.

Zambians want to associate themselves with mandarin as a way of easing communication with Chinese nationals at work or when conducting business.

"I learned mandarin recently in Mpongwe from Chinese volunteers who taught me and my other colleagues the language at no cost," said Maureen Mwape, a trader.

She said speaking mandarin has made her able to freely do business with the Chinese.

"Not only am I able to communicate properly with the Chinese using mandarin, but I have also been able to understand a bit of their hard-working culture," she said.

Joseph Kangwa, a farmer in Mpongwe also appreciated having known a bit of mandarin.

"It is an interesting language, I have learned best farming practices from Chinese, using Mandarin as a medium of communication," Kangwa said.

He encouraged his fellow farmers to learn the Chinese language. "Chinese people are well-informed people, so we need to know their language if we are going to acquire a lot of knowledge and wisdom from them," he said.

He said Zambians especially children should not only be thinking of English or French as the only international languages but should look forward to learning Chinese too.

"The Chinese are all over the globe, so therefore we must understand that this language is spoken everywhere in the World," Kangwa said.

And a pre-school teacher in Mpongwe, Sandra Mwansa said she is currently doing private lessons in mandarin. "My vision is that by March 2021, I should be able to read, write and speak the Mandarin language," she said.

Mwansa said that she also wants to teach pupils the mandarin language at her school.

"I think all schools and colleges including universities in the country should be teaching mandarin. It is a language that can be used to foster national development," she said. Enditem
