Chinese county investigating clenbuterol-tainted sheep

SHIJIAZHUANG, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The county of Qingxian in north China's Hebei Province has launched investigations after a case of clenbuterol-tainted sheep was exposed on Monday night during the annual "3.15 Gala" produced by the state broadcaster China Central Television to mark World Consumer Rights Day.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the feed of a sheep farm in the township of Xinxing of Qingxian had tested positive for clenbuterol. The local government is also testing 219,000 sheep in stock for clenbuterol in Xinxing and investigating all sheep farms across the county.

Three people involved in the case are in custody and one slaughterhouse has been closed.

Qingxian County has 664 sheep farms, with a total of 480,000 sheep in stock and an annual output of 700,000 sheep. It has four slaughterhouses with an annual slaughter capacity of 500,000 sheep. The township of Xinxing has 160 sheep farms each with a breeding scale of no fewer than 1,000 sheep. Enditem
