To know these mountains’ names following the map

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Chongqing is a river city, but also a mountain city, built on mountains. It has many mountains and even famous mountains. So what are the names of the famous mountains in Chongqing? Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources and Chongqing Center for Geographic Information and Remote Sensing Application recently launched a “Map of Famous Mountains in Chongqing”, guiding people to explore the stories behind famous mountains.

It is understood that the name of each famous mountain in Chongqing is also very different. Some are named because of their shapes, such as Eling Mountain, Jinfo Mountain, Jiuchongshan Mountain, Jinfeng Mountain, and Huanggua Mountain; and some get their name from legends or poems and other literary works, such as Fairy Mountain, Shennv Peak, Tushan Mountain, Mingshan Mountain, and Taibai Rock, and myths, folklore, or poems inscribed by celebrities have endowed these mountains with magical charm. Some are named for their locations, such as Beishan, Nanshan and Jixin Mountain; and some get their name from products, such as Pipa Mountain, Gujian Mountain and Tieshanping. In addition, some get their name because of the local natural conditions, such as Dafengbao.

Nanchuan Jinfo (Gold Buddha) Mountain

It is named after the Annals of Nanchuan County (Mountains) during the reign of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty that “the mountain is surrounded by cliffs and in the form of ancient Buddha”.

Wulong Fairy Mountain

It is named after the Annals of Restoring Fuzhou (Now Fuling) during the reign of Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty that “there is a deep cave halfway up the mountain; and a legend says that there are fairies living here and they fly up to heaven.”

Qijiang Gujian Mountain

It was named after the Annals of Qijiang County (1991) that “According to a legend, in the Ming Wanli thirty-eight year, when building Dongyue Temple and excavating the foundation, an ancient sword and an ancient mirror were obtained, so the mountain was named as “Gujian (meaning ancient sword) Mountain”.

Wuxi Jixin Mountain 

Jixin Mountain is a part of Jinjiling Mountain who is named for its shape like a golden rooster. According to the Annals of Daning County, “there are rugged mountain roads, sparsely populated, with many peaks gathered, and it is the throat of three provinces.”.

Dazu Beishan Mountain

It is formerly known as Longgang Mountain. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, it was found that there is an inscription of “北山 (Beishan in pinyin)” among cliffs, and it was located in the north of the county, so it was named as “Beishan Mountain”.
