CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On June 11, as an important part of the 2021 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day host city activities, the opening ceremony of the National Palace Museum Relocation Memorial South in Chongqing was held in Ciyun Old Street, Nanan District, renewing the “relationships between thousands of miles” of the Palace relics and the mountain city Chongqing.

During the period of anti-Japanese war, Anderson & Co., a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit, located on Chongqing's Nanbin Road, secretly stored 3,694 boxes of cultural relics moved south by the National Palace, making an important contribution to the protection of national treasures and the transmission of Chinese cultural heritage. Today, after the restoration of heritage buildings, the creation of the surrounding environment, and the presentation of diversified businesses, the eight buildings in the area of the former site of Anderson & Co., have been transformed into National Palace Museum Relocation Memorial South in Chongqing.

According to the introduction, it covers an overall area of 2,500 square meters, including a memorial hall, cultural lecture halls, educational classrooms, library of the Forbidden City, bookstores, cultural and creative cultural venues and supporting services. It is China’s first thematic historical memorial museum set up within the site of the National Palace Museum Relocation Memorial South. The museum combines graphics, images and objects to commemorate the feat of the southward relocation of cultural relics of the National Palace Museum during the anti-Japanese war, and vividly restores the relevant historical facts.

“The southward relocation of cultural relics of the National Palace Museum is an extraordinary history of the National Palace Museum, but also a history of resistance against invaders in the Chinese nation. The opening of the National Palace Museum Relocation Memorial South in Chongqing is a powerful interpretation of ‘cultural relics reflecting the century-long journey’. The establishment of the Memorial Hall will help the general public to understand more deeply the culture of the Palace Museum and the history of the anti-Japanese war,” Yan Hongbin, vice president of the Palace Museum, said at the opening ceremony. In the future, the Palace Museum will continue to support the work of the National Palace Museum Relocation Memorial South in Chongqing, through the active participation of the whole community, together to create a new era in the cause of cultural heritage protection and the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics.
