BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A platform for materials calculations was put into operation in the Huairou Science City in the northeast suburbs of Beijing.

The platform was developed by the Institute of Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the city of Beijing. It is the "brain" of a materials genome platform, which will likely be completed by the end of 2021.

Due to the long development time and uncertain success rates, traditional materials research methods have become the bottleneck of industrial product innovation and quality optimization.

The institute uses the "high-throughput first-principles" calculation to enhance the materials genome computing and data processing capacity and establish the materials genome database and cloud resource platform. It will provide data-sharing services for researchers worldwide.

The platform is a supercomputing facility to meet the needs of individualized services of materials genome applications. Its application database has accumulated high-quality calculation results of 180,000 inorganic crystals, according to the institute. Enditem
