CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The Central Meteorological Observatory issued an important weather reminder at 15:00 on August 9th. It was expected that the rainfall would develop eastward from the night of the 9th to the 14th, and there would be heavy rainfall from the east of Southwest China to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Since the 7th, heavy rainfall has occurred in the eastern part of Southwest China. Among them, the cumulative rainfall in central and northern Chongqing was 50-150 mm, while the cumulative rainfall in local areas of Chongqing Fuling was 200-400 mm. The maximum hourly rainfall reached 50-80 mm, and the local rainfall was 90-131 mm. On the 8th, the daily rainfall in Fuling, Chongqing (175.2 mm) exceeded the historical extreme value since the meteorological record.

The Central Meteorological Observatory predicted that from the night of the 9th to the 14th, the rainfall would develop eastward, and there would be heavy rainfall from the east of Southwest China to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The period of the highest rainfall occurred from the 11th to the 13th, and the areas of the highest rainfall was located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to the northern part of the Yangtze River. There would be heavy to heavy rain in the east of Southwest China, Jianghan, Jianghuai, the middle and north of Jiangnan and the south of Southern China.

Meteorological experts remind that this rainfall is beneficial to alleviate high temperature and drought, enhance reservoir water storage, and increase the soil moisture in dry lands. However, due to the long-lasting and large accumulated rainfall, the superposition degree of some heavy rainfall areas is high, and the drought disasters in some areas may turn into serious flooding problems. It is urgent to prevent the adverse effects of mountain torrents, landslides, debris flows, urban and rural water-logging, etc. that may be caused by continuous heavy rainfall.
