CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- The 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU for short) was recently released, presenting the leading 1,000 research universities in the world, with a total of 157 universities in Mainland China on the list.

It is learned that four universities in Chongqing are on the list this year, namely Chongqing University, Southwest University, Army Medical University and Chongqing Medical University.

Among them, Chongqing University is ranked as one of the top 300 universities in the world. Chongqing University has elevated its ranking from 501-600 in 2017 to 201-300 in 2021, an improvement of three slots, achieving a cross-slot advancement and a rapid rise in academic standards, international influence and competitiveness. In the 2021 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects released in May this year, seven disciplines of Chongqing University were included in the top 50 globally, ranking 17th among universities in Mainland China.

It is understood that ARWU, one of the four most recognized university rankings in the world, was first published in 2003 and this year is the 19th edition. ARWU evaluation system uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. All of these are based on internationally comparable objective indicators and third-party data, leading the wave of international university rankings, which have been widely followed and heavily cited by many government organizations, media, cities, institutions and companies, making it one of the most influential university rankings in the world.
