TRIPOLI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Monday launched training sessions for Libya's primary healthcare physicians over comprehensive neonatal and childhood healthcare.

UNICEF, in partnership with its healthcare partners and the World Health Organisation, kick-started the training on the Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness targeting 27 primary healthcare physicians from different Libyan municipalities, UNICEF said in a statement.

"One of the main topics highlighted during the training was the effective strategies for assessing, identifying, and treating the common and high causes of mortality in children under the age of five," it said.

With support from the European Union and Germany, "UNICEF continues to work to end preventable maternal, new-born and child deaths by supporting local health facilities to scale-up essential maternal and new-born care services," UNICEF said.

UNICEF and its partners also aim to strengthen the healthcare delivery network in Libya as well as health facilities to provide quality maternal, new-born and nutrition services to prevent morbidity and mortality, it said. Enditem
