BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese animated film "White Snake 2: The Tribulation of Green Snake" saw cumulative ticket sales surge past 500 million yuan (about 77.20 million U.S. dollars) Tuesday, more than the sum generated by its predecessor "White Snake," a 2019 hit.

Also from Light Chaser Animation and loosely based on the legend of the White Snake, the sequel currently boasts a rating of 7.2 out of 10 based on nearly 180,000 reviews on review platform Douban.

After hitting theaters on July 23, "White Snake 2" is expected to complete its China box office run with more than 560 million yuan, according to estimates by box office tracker Maoyan.

"White Snake" garnered around 469 million yuan at China's box office, data by the China Movie Data Information Network showed.

"New Gods: Nezha Reborn," an animated fantasy by the same studio released during the Spring Festival holiday this year, finished its box office run with 456 million yuan. Enditem
