UN urges Libyan parties to maintain calm, stability

2021-08-19 15:35:20

TRIPOLI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday called on Libyan parties to maintain calm and stability in the country.

UNSMIL calls on all parties in Libya to "refrain from any mobilization or deployment of security elements and troops that may be perceived as an escalation and may undermine the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement of Oct. 23, 2020," the mission said in a statement.

UNSMIL urged all parties to respect the lines of demarcation set at the time of signing the ceasefire agreement.

"UNSMIL renews its support to the efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission aimed at maintaining calm and stability and urges all parties in Libya to support these efforts in order to create a peaceful and conducive environment for the holding of national elections on Dec. 24, 2021," the statement said.

The mission also called on all concerned national and international actors to ensure, respect, and support the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

A war broke out in April 2019 between the eastern-based army and the former UN-backed Government of National Accord in and around the capital Tripoli, which lasted more than a year before the rivals signed a ceasefire agreement that ended the war.

The UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) selected a new executive authority of a unity government and a presidency council, ending years of political division in the country.

The new executive authority's main task is to prepare for the general elections to be held on Dec. 24 this year, as endorsed by the LPDF. Enditem
