It is understood that the Challenge will feature “1+4+N”, a comprehensive upgrade model of “1” consumer event, “4” core professional events and “N” smart car technology events to showcase the new industry of intelligent connected vehicles. It includes a number of new highlights such as the first low-speed driveless challenge and the introduction of a cloud platform for the first time in the virtual simulation challenge. All competitions have also been enhanced in terms of professionalism, authority and spectacle.

After the opening ceremony, Professor Zhu Xichan of Tongji University said in an interview that the main purpose of organizing this Challenge is to mobilize the whole population to really understand the function of autonomous driving, and also to promote enterprises to produce safer cars that will not only develop the industry but will eventually serve society.

The Challenge was the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Challenge, which was divided into two events, AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) and APS (Automatic Parking System). Twenty-one consumers attended the Challenge with their cars, and the AEB and APS systems of a batch of mass-produced smart models were put through their paces.

The reporter saw that the AEB included a pedestrian crossing scenario, which mainly assessed the automatic braking function of autonomous cars in emergency situations. APS contains three scenarios: parallel, perpendicular and diagonal parking spaces, which mainly assessed the one-touch automatic parking function of autonomous cars facing typical urban parking spaces.

“I took part in the Challenge last year, but only in one competition; this year I took part in both events. Through the Challenge, I have gained a better understanding of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in my car and I was able to use them better. But it is always just an assistance - you still have to take control of your own driving safety,” Tao Peng, an individual participant, told the reporter.
