LES CAYES, Haiti, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- After a powerful earthquake hit Haiti in mid-August, foreign aid teams and local volunteers have been working around the clock to help local residents get their life back on track.

Outside a ward at the Immaculee Conception Hospital in Les Cayes, one of the hardest-hit Haitian communities, a volunteer paramedic with the international non-governmental organization Team Rubicon, was holding and comforting a little boy while treating a wound on his face.

Minutes later, one of the organization's volunteer doctors treated a man's leg wound and, with the help of an interpreter, gave him instructions on how to take care of his injury.

When her team arrived in Haiti, paramedic Rachel Alford said the first thing they did was asking the Haitian doctors how they could help.

She said her organization is doing whatever is necessary and adapts to the needs of local doctors, who in the face of such a difficult situation, are still trying hard to move things forward.

Luis Alva, leader of the Mexico-based group International Rescue Topos A.C., said they have worked closely with local people, especially with Haitian firefighters, who they believe have done a great job.

The group of Mexican rescuers were traveling through different parts of Les Cayes, accompanied by Haitian firefighters and police officers -- some of them wearing the uniform of the organization.

Generally, each foreign aid team was accompanied by a local person, who served as an interpreter to facilitate their rescue operations.

As of Sunday, the death toll from the earthquake since Aug. 14 had risen to 2,207, with 344 still missing, said the country's civil protection agency.

The earthquake also left at least 12,268 injured, with more than 77,000 homes damaged and 53,000 destroyed, the agency tweeted. Enditem
