2021-08-31 11:56:49

The Graffiti Street in front of the old campus of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute was upgraded.

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Recently, the Graffiti Street in front of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute was upgraded. What new attractions have been added to the 2.0 version of Huangjueping Graffiti Street? What new scenes have been added to the street? The reporter recently interviewed Professor Huang Yun, Dean of the College of Construction and Environment of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, to find the answers.

The newly painted exterior walls of the 11 buildings have gathered the works of well-known local contemporary artists such as Luo Zhongli, Pang Maokun, Zhang Xiaogang and Yang Shu.

What are the differences compared to the previous 1.0 Graffiti Street?

Professor Huang Yun: Compared to version 1.0, the planning of the 2.0 version of the Art Street is more thematic and historical.

The newly painted exterior walls of the 11 buildings have gathered the works of well-known local contemporary artists such as Luo Zhongli, Pang Maokun, Zhang Xiaogang and Yang Shu. It is worth mentioning that there are not only master paintings, but also student works. The works span a long period of time and cover a more diversified form of works, reproduction of works in the field of not only Chinese painting but also Western modern art and so on. This is also another way of presenting the works of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in various stages.

Huangjueping Graffiti Art Street upgrading project starts from the Tielu Primary School and ends at the gate of Chongqing 501 Art Base and Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, with a total length of about 1200 meters. The project plans to renovate 11 buildings along the street, improve the wall surface of about 23,000 square meters, and implement ground painting of about 6,500 square meters, which is divided into four functional areas: historical and cultural display area, artistic and creative derivative area, thematic story graffiti area and commercial creative bazaar area.

It is worth mentioning that the old campus of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute also has a new “honeycomb” art gallery. Through the red wall brick and irregular surface, the art gallery integrates the combination of nature, art, environment, and environmental protection into a unique building. No metal materials are used throughout this shell, however, all of it is made of brick and a high-tech cement with high-pressure concrete whose wall thickness is only 9 centimeters.

In the future, the building will be used as a semi-open space for exhibitions, as well as a resting place for the public.

What is the goal of upgrading Graffiti Street as a famous but old attraction?

Professor Huang Yun: Huangjueping Graffiti Street was opened 14 years ago and was the largest graffiti artwork group in China at that time, which has been upgrading since March this year. The reason for this upgrade is that the “Fine Arts Peninsula” is an important theme in the construction of the Jiulong Peninsula, and 2.0 Graffiti Street is an important part of it.

The success of 1.0 Graffiti Street makes the project attract more attention, so upgrading on this basis is both a new way to show the city’s aesthetic education and a bold attempt to give new meaning to a famous but old attraction.

Huangjueping Graffiti Street has purchased the copyright of a large number of master paintings and reproduced them on urban buildings. It also delivers an important message that master artworks can be not only something unrealistic and something put on the walls, but it should be also rooted throughout the living space of the community. Sichuan Fine Arts Institute also hopes that the different interpretations of the works will bring new opportunities for aesthetic education in the city.

When will it be officially completed and meet with the public?

Professor Huang Yun: Currently, 95% of the whole project has been completed, and if it goes well, it will be fully upgraded and opened to the public in the future. We also hope that 2.0 Graffiti Street will become a cultural card and a new landmark in Chongqing. (Translated by Wang Junli, Fathom Language Limited)
