UN chief welcomes Denmark's climate financing initiatives

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement by the Danish government on Monday that it will allocate 60 percent of climate financial aid to climate adaptation measures in its national budget proposal, said his spokesman.

The secretary-general has called for at least half of all climate finance to be devoted to adaptation and resilience, and Denmark's response is a powerful example of climate leadership for other donor countries and multilateral development banks to follow, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman.

"This is also a very strong signal for all the countries and vulnerable communities on the front line that badly need protection from climate impacts," he told a daily press briefing.

Regarding the annual grant of 100 billion U.S. dollars that developed countries have promised developing countries for climate adaptation purposes, Denmark has demonstrated its leadership in both the quantity and quality of climate finance, with its target of delivering around 500 million dollars annually in grant financing, mainly targeting the poorest and most vulnerable countries, said the spokesman.

The world will be watching closely for other advanced economies, in particular from the Group of Seven most industrialized countries, to come forward with their contributions before the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, he said. Enditem
