Argentina pledges to protect biodiversity

2021-08-31 14:23:33

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Monday ratified his country's commitment to protecting biodiversity.

"Protecting biodiversity and human rights are objectives that must go hand in hand," Fernandez said via videoconference during a preliminary gathering to the upcoming 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15).

"The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are very important objectives, not only for the protection of nature, but also for social inclusion, the revitalization of economies and the generation of employment." Fernandez said.

Colombian President Ivan Duque hosted the event that invited leaders to lay the groundwork for goals of commitment to the sustainable use of biodiversity, according to a statement from the Argentine president's office.

COP15 will take place in two parts: virtually from Oct. 11 to 15 and face-to-face from April 25 to May 8, 2022 in Kunming, China.

Participating in the preliminary meeting were the presidents of Ecuador, Chile, Costa Rica and Panama, among others, as well as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and United Nations Environment Program Executive Director Inger Andersen. Enditem
