CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Intriguing comics to recreate scenes from science fiction? The father, who is a professor, wrote a science fiction novel, and his 8-year-old son listened and drew, using his imagination to recreate his own science fiction world.

Yuangu by Pu Yongjian

Pu Yongjian is a professor and PhD supervisor of Chongqing University, who also enjoys studying literature and fine art, and has opened his own studio in the campus of Chongqing University. His wife, He Tao, loves Chinese painting, and in this scholar-gentry family, his son has loved to draw since he was young.

Eight years ago, Pu Chunyu was born. The father, Pu Yongjian, published the science fiction novel Dr. X and gave this as a gift to his son. Sometimes Pu Yongjian would pick up the book and read it to his son. Not long ago, Pu Chunyu used his imagination to turn the novel’s storyline into a comic strip while listening to it.

“To be honest, I was really surprised by my son’s imagination. There are a lot of details in the book that I didn’t represent and he drew them quite logically...” Pu Yongjian said that other than this science fiction novel, his wife He Tao also told his son about his upbringing as a child, from being naughty to working hard on his own and eventually getting into Peking University, as a way to tell his son to take his studies seriously. The couple was surprised and delighted when their son picked up a paintbrush and Pu Yongjian’s experience into cartoon form.

“Through the comic, I learned a lot of knowledge, such as the characteristics of dark matter...” Pu Chunyu said that apart from learning science from his dad’s novel, he also learnt about tourist attractions in Chongqing, such as Baidicheng, Fengjie Tiankeng, Hongyadong and Jinfo Mountain.

Pu Yongjian said that his son likes to draw characters and was keen to have him draw some of the most famous books in the world. In his opinion, it is important to develop his son’s interest. Book lessons should not be understood passively by the child, and the approach is important. As a parent, he hopes that his son will find a hobby in learning and have a relaxed and happy learning process in the future. (Translated by Wang Huixin, Fathom Language Limited)
