UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday warned against any attempt to undermine the central role of the United Nations (UN) in world politics.
"Essentially, we have no other option, as the broad cooperation (mechanism) of the United Nations is particularly relevant now, when the number of problems on the international agenda is increasing, the range of cross-border threats is expanding, numerous regional hot spots of tension have a substantial potential to destabilize," Lavrov told the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
Under such circumstances, the world body "should play a central coordinating role in world politics, fully unleashing its potential of universal multiculturalism and legitimacy," he urged.
Recently, there are persistent attempts to diminish the UN's role in resolving the key problems of today, or to sideline it, or to make it a malleable tool for promoting one's self-interests, he said, warning that the "might-is-right approach" is being applied -- instead of international law -- with increasing frequency.
The Russian diplomat said the so-called rules based order claimed by the West is founded on double standards. When it serves the West's interests, people's right to self-determination is an absolute; when the right to self-determination runs counter to the West's geopolitical interests, the West forgets all about it, he said.
U.S. President Joe Biden has recently announced the rejection of the use of military methods to remake other countries, said Lavrov. "We expect the U.S. to take one step further and reject any other methods of imposing their development model on others, not only military ones." Enditem
