In recent years, with the upgrading of the consumption of silver-haired people, the travel frequency of silver-haired people is also increasing. According to Ctrip data, as of October this year, the number of registered users aged 60 and above on the platform increased by 22% compared with the same period in 2020, and the overall order volume increased by 37% year-on-year, of which orders for group tours rose nearly 60% year-on-year.
In terms of travel expenses, the elderly groups represented by the post-50s and post-60s have shown strong consumer demand. According to Ctrip data, in the past six months, the per capita spending of the post-50s and post-60s has increased by 35% compared with the same period last year, an increase of more than 22% of the post-90s and post-2000s. Among them, 2000-3000 yuan tourism products on Ctrip platform are the most popular, with popular high-end products including Xinjiang Customized Tour, Nyingchi Customized Tour, Beijing High-end Customized Tour, Tibet High-end Customized Tour, etc., with an average of more than 6000 yuan per capita.
The silver-haired travel mode also presents new characteristics. As the main force of group tours in the past, elderly tourists are more likely to travel by customized tours, private groups and other ways to travel with family or friends to enhance feelings during the journey. According to Ctrip platform data, the number of customized tour orders for users aged 60 and above increased by 47% compared with the same period in 2020, while private group orders increased by 161% compared with the same period last year.
It is worth noting that silver-haired people are also becoming more fashionable, and some have begun to make their own strategies, drive on the road, and even have more interesting ways for travels than young people. According to Ctrip data, car rental orders for users aged 60 and above have increased by 108% in the past six months, exceeding the 43% growth level of the market. The elderly also gradually like to record the beauty and feelings during the journey. Since the beginning of the year, the number of users aged 60 and above in Ctrip community has increased by 26% compared with the same period last year, and the number of posts increased by 16% compared with the same period last year.
However, most silver-haired people still put quality, comfort and worry first. “The elderly at home don’t want to worry about their own travel. They hope that all kinds of things are taken care of, and all what they do is just to have fun. They do not like to arrange their itinerary too tight and tiring. Private groups with a small number of people are very suitable for them.” Users who have repeatedly booked products for their parents on the Ctrip platform said that there are more such users, with data showing that the number of orders booked by young people for the elderly on Ctrip platform has increased by 47% over the past six months compared with the same period last year.
