CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Fish with fermented soya beans, wheat glutinous rice cake, sugar painting, shredded chicken, cold noodles … Recently, the “Nostalgia for Roots - Wheat Field Cooking Festival” Chongqing Rural School Children’s Palace celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the founding of CPC was held at Nanhuagong Primary School in Zhutuo Town, Yongchuan District. Hundreds of students turned into “chefs” and showed their gains in the rural school children’s palace.

As soon as you entered the playground, the air was filled with a “smell of home”. Following the smell, you would realize that it was the “chefs” who were cooking delicacies in front of each booth.

“Teachers, come and taste the fish with fermented soya beans I made myself. It’s very delicious!” Tang Mengling, a sixth grader from Ji’an Primary School in Ji’an Town of Yongchuan District, shouted vigorously with freshly cooked Yongchuan fish with fermented soya beans. “Fermented soya beans should be chopped fine, or it will be tasteless, and the heat should be well mastered, otherwise the fish will not be so fresh and tender.” After studying the cuisine course at the rural school children’s palace, Tang Mengling has kept the details of cooking firmly in mind, and the fish with fermented soya beans she made is becoming much more “hometown-like”.

The children from Honglu Primary School in Honglu Town of Yongchuan District showed off two popular specialties, “toothpick meat” and “pumpkin pie”. Just after they served the dishes, the plates in front of the display booth were empty. “At that time, cooking courses were offered to cultivate children’s ability to be self-reliant, so that they could also cook some home-cooked dishes at home.” The person in charge of the course said that a labor practice base has also been set up in the school, and the food is planted and picked by the children themselves, so that the children can gain something from it through such an integrated process.

“Give me another bowl of fish balls!” “This shredded chicken tastes just right!” … There was an endless stream of people in front of the booth, and everyone spoke highly of the craftsmanship of the “chefs”. In addition to all kinds of delicious food, the schools also offered their own rural school children’s palace characteristic courses, palm leaves weaving, seed painting, paper-cutting and other colorful projects.
