A street and alley tour in search of old Yuzhong memories
CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- During the New Year’s Day holiday, the weather in Chongqing continued to be sunny, and many citizens and tourists went into the streets and alleys of Yuzhong to visit the exhibitions, enjoy the river scenery, taste the food, reminisce about the old days and experience the unique atmosphere of Chongqing’s “Mother Town” - Yuzhong District.
The old streets and alleys in Yuzhong are like the palm lines of the city, with the evolution of the city, the veins of culture and the traces of the years engraved within one wall and one tile. During the New Year's Day holiday, these old streets and alleys launched special activities to create a strong festive atmosphere, attracting many citizens and tourists.
As the only alley in Chongqing named after “Mountain City”, Mountain City Alley epitomizes the history, culture and landscape of Chongqing. During the holiday season, the much-loved Renai Wilderness Park was newly upgraded and opened, with a unique landscape design that attracted many photography enthusiasts to take photos. The street also introduced a new “immersive” approach based on the old Chongqing theme, allowing citizens and tourists to attend a New Year’s Eve dress-up party in the air-raid shelter and shop for their favorite items at the highway bazaar, which was very popular.
Dajia Alley is another alley in Yuzhong District that has been transformed after more than three years of urban renewal and comprehensive environmental improvement in accordance with the “One Street, Three Areas”. It is a popular destination for young people with small, sophisticated shops, cafes and bistros along the river and the iconic orange boxes. During New Year’s Day holiday, the street launched the “Year of the Tiger on the Cliff” activity to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Under the illumination of red lanterns, a wide varieties of merchants were displayed at the Cliffside Bazaar, exuding a strong festive atmosphere.
Unlike Mountain City Alley and Daijia Alley, which were close to life, Baixiang Street has more of a bookish atmosphere in its traditional landscape area. In Xiling Study Complex located in the neighborhood, a joint exhibition of “Bayu Seal - the First Exhibition of the Works of Chongqing Members of Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society” organized by Chongqing Calligraphers Association, Yuzhong District Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Chongqing Changjia Culture and Tourism Company was held, gathering the works of eight members of Xiling Seal Engraver’s Society since its inception, creating an artistic feast of epigraphy calligraphy and painting for the audience, and attracting many peers and citizens who like the art of calligraphy and painting and tourists to visit.
“If high-rise buildings and prosperous shopping areas are the surface of Yuzhong, then the old streets and alleys, which are hidden from view, are the ‘inside’.” Yao Wenjing, a teacher and tourist, told the writer that not only has the environment of Shibati, Mountain City Alley and Baixiang Street become better, but the quality has also been greatly improved, which makes her feel proud as a Chongqing resident.
