ABUJA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government on Monday said it has been exploring ways of improving the country's energy generation and supply.

Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Ogbonnaya Onu told reporters in Abuja that with the new Revised National Energy Policy and Related Master Plan, the country's electricity generation and supply would be improved to boost national development.

"It would also help us in our aim to build a strong industrial base for the nation. Nigeria is rich in energy resources with fast-moving rivers, the abundance of sunshine, wind energy, geothermal sources, bio-mass in addition to our huge deposit of natural gas yet to be fully exploited," Onu said.

According to Onu, an energy mix that will utilize the wide range of energy resources available in the country is needed and must be pursued with vigor.

The government has also begun to track research in other countries on nuclear fusion for energy use, noting the countries involved in the research were planning to achieve energy sufficiency in the future. Nigeria, Onu said, aims to join such nations to exploit the atom for energy supply.

Onu added that the country's energy policy and energy master plan need to be upgraded to guide energy development in Nigeria.
