CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On the morning of August 9, it was a fine and clear day in Chongqing main urban area. During the day, it was sunny and cloudy with local showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon and the temperature ranging from 22°C to 43°C. The maximum temperature exceeded 37°C in 26 districts and counties, including Tongnan District, Hechuan district and Tongliang district and most of the main urban area. The maximum temperature exceeded 40°C in 16 districts and counties, including Yunyang County, Fengjie County, Wuxi County and Pengshui County and parts of the main urban area, and the maximum temperature in Beibei national station was 42.6°C.

How long is it going to be so hot?

Experts from Chongqing Meteorological Station explained that the current round of hot days started from July 24 and are expected to continue. Daily maximum temperature will reach 35°C - 41°C in most areas, and 40°C or higher for 5 to 7 days in areas along the river valleys, locally 42°C to 44°C. The daily maximum temperature of some districts and counties in the Midwest and Northeast will approach or exceed the extreme value of the same period in history.

It is expected that by August 22, there will be 33 days in total with high temperature in this round, 13.2 days more than the same period of the previous years (19.9 days) and close to the extreme value of the same period since meteorological records were kept (2006, 36.9 days). During the hot days, there will be showers from afternoon to night in some areas, accompanied by strong convective weather such as gusty winds, short-time heavy rainfall, lightning and hail.

It is expected that there will be 1 to 2 times of rainfall in Chongqing from late August to early September, and the high temperature will go down. There will still be periodic hot days during the rainfall. It is preliminarily predicted there will be 7-9 days with temperature of 35°C ~ 38°C.

Experts remind that the continuous sunny and hot days will cause heatstroke, which can be prevented by taking some measures, including reducing outdoor activities, getting enough sleep, eating more fresh fruit and vegetables, drinking green tea and eating less greasy food.
