Wild Tibetan macaques found in Simian Mountain

2022-08-19 14:21:11

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Good news came from the Forest Resource Service Center in Simian Mountain (referred to as “Simian Mountain Service Center”) a few days ago that the infrared cameras set in the key area of the Municipal Nature Reserve in Simian Mountain have captured the signs of wild Tibetan macaques, the second-class national-level protected wild animals. This is the first time that this species has been discovered and recorded in Jiangjin District, and it is also the very first image record of Tibetan macaques in Chongqing.

There’s exactly a distribution of wild Tibetan macaques in Chongqing

We can see from the videos that two adult Tibetan macaques, along with over ten sub-adult and young Tibetan macaques were looking for food and playing games in the Dawopu primeval forest of the Nature Reserve. Sometimes they caught insects in the trees and sometimes they picked up wild fruits on the ground, moving quickly in a leisurely manner. The two baby Tibetan macaques clinging to their mother didn’t move a step from their mother and sometimes popped their heads out.

Professor Wang Zhijian, from the School of Life Sciences of the Southwest University, introduced that there were written documents recording the distribution of Tibetan macaques in several districts and counties in Chongqing, but the specific video data and the exact location was doubted. Now the distribution of Tibetan macaques in Chongqing is greatly supported by the videos taken in the Simian Mountain.

“With an elevation of about 1,500 meters, the ecological environment in the Dawopu primeval forest is sound and suitable for the survival and reproduction of many rare wild animals. It had provided the necessary ecological condition for the Tibetan macaques we discovered today.” The staff from the epidemic source and disease monitoring station of the Simian Mountain Service Center added that the Tibetan macaque population has three generations living together: the older, the adult and the younger generations, which is indicative of a stable population structure. Numerous signs of Tibetan macaques are found simultaneously at different locations in the key area of the Nature Reserve. As valuable first-hand information, these videos will help us gain a more comprehensive knowledge of the distribution of rare animals in Chongqing and carry out measures to protect rare wild animals in an effective way.
