Thanks to the progress of science and technology, Chongqing has made remarkable achievements in medical care, resulting in great improvement in people’s health. In whole area of municipal jurisdiction, an integral medical care system has taken shape. The system covers 4,643 medical institutions, including 3,171 hospitals. The number of health professionals amount to 110,000. By the end of 1998, the number of hospital patients amounted to 55 million including 1 million in-patients. The rate of recovery reached 70%. Since 1949, the average of life expectancy in Chongqing has doubled from 35 to 71.2 years.
The large and medium sized hospitals are provided with modern diagnosis and treatment equipment. As one of the largest medical centers in China, The Chongqing First Aid Center that was set up by China and Italy has complete advanced prevention, inspection, and rescue system of which has reached the cutting-edge level in its kind. The Third Army Medical University and its auxiliary hospitals are in preponderance for its research on hepatobiliary surgery, burn traumatology and other wound treatment. The Auxiliary Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is at an advanced position in cerebrotomy, orthopaedics, epidemiology and pediatrics.
Chongqing is famous for its research on traditional Chinese medical science, and cultivated many qualified professionals. More than 9,000 senior doctors practice their 46 hospitals of Chinese traditional medicine and 2 hospitals combining Chinese and western medicine.
