Construction designer tells the story behind the famous Liziba Station

Restore original design intention
In 1998, Ye Tianyi and his team accepted the commission from a developer to design the residential building where the CRT Liziba Station is located. Coincidentally, the CRT Line 2 would also need to pass from this location and a station needed to be set up here.
At that time, there was actually no alternative. Ye Tianyi said that if he did not design them together, then, "Either Line 2 will be rerouted, which is impossible; or the developer will build houses in another block, which is also impossible. " So Ye Tianyi and his team boldly proposed this idea -- a combination of the two projects that allowed the light rail to pass through the building.
This idea, through repeated revisions and repeated arguments of six large manuscripts, the team of 13 individuals completed the drawing design in two years.
How to solve the noise and vibration?
Many netizens praised the magic of “crossing a building,” and raised the question of “whether or not the light rail will cause vibration and noise in the building”.
"There is no vibration," said Ye Tianyi. "The pillars of the track and the structural columns of the house are completely separate, with a distance of 20 centimeters." Therefore, when the light rail passes, the house will not vibrate. "There is no pool, common property management or shared power facilities between them," Ye Tianyi said with a smile.
"The noise cannot be completely avoided, but the results of the tests are in line with the requirements," said Ye Tianyi. Compared with the light rail, the subway is a "heavy track." There is only one track for the light rail and two tracks for the subway. Its carrying capacity and noise are much greater than that of the light rail. Therefore, crossing through a building may only be achieved for a light rail.
Solve three technical problems with "completely separate"
The 6th to 8th floors of the entire building are light rail traffic areas. The 6th floor is the equipment floor, the 7th floor is the station hall floor, and the 8th floor is the platform itself. With the basement there is a total of 20 floors. The difference in height between the 1st and 8th floors is 26 meters, and between the 8th and 9th floors, 5.1 meters.
During the design process, Ye Tianyi and his team encountered three technical problems.
First of all, behind the building is Guihuayuan Road, which is a long steep slope. The project is built on a section of long slope. "It is a natural slope, which may collapse or experience landslides." The problem was solved by commissioning a geological survey and design department to design a slope support.
The second and most difficult point was how to deal with the relationship between the track structure and the housing structure. “This is a combination of 'three-in-one'”, says Ye Tianyi, who combined the three parts of rails, rail transit service rooms and buildings. The house is stationary, but the track is dynamic. The considerations of the two external forces are completely different, and the performance requirements under the force are not the same. Through repeated revision of the design and demonstration, the final design is that the station and the building are integrated, and the track is independent. “Even if the building is completely removed, it will not affect the track’s operation.”
Finally, it is the issue of fire protection and evacuation of people. The requirements for residential and rail transit are different. "So two systems have been set up to completely separate the two."
In other words, these three problems are finally solved by “completely separating and simplifying everything”. (Translated by Yang Lifu, Fathom Language Limited)
