Railway bridge guardians under the scorching sun
The maintenance of the bridge is divided into several tasks. When the reporter arrived at the bridge in the morning, the two groups would be fastening the bolts of wooden railroad ties and coating the asphalt on the wooden railroad ties. The fastening is to prevent the expansion of the rails and to ensure the safe operation of the train. The coating is to prevent corrosion, to prolong the service life of the ties and to ensure the bearing capacity.
Sweat continued to drip from the face.
Although some mottled shadows are formed on the bridge deck due to the steel beams over the bridge, the hot sunshine can't be resisted. In a short time, the workers' clothes are almost soaked. There are 926 numbered wooden ties on the bridge, and on average each worker needs to squat over 300 times a day only for tightening bolts. The job is easy but with heavy workload.
Bridge maintenance operations can only be carried out in the gap of train passing, and the length of time varies.
In addition to tightening, inspecting is a part of the job. This is a work similar to the "window cleaners". Workers wear long-sleeved protective clothing, safety helmets, and fasten their seat belts. In addition to the bridge deck, the rail, the bridge pier and the bridge body are to be inspected. It is as if “enjoying sauna” in the sun and on the steel beams.
The measured temperature on the railroad tie is 61 degrees Celsius.
