Chongqing among the Top 10 active cities in China for night-time consumption

The night-time economy on its way to becoming another city card of Chongqing

CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- Ranked as one of the top 10 cities in the night-time economy for two consecutive years, Chongqing’s night-time economy has revealed its proud achievements. According to the consumption data recently released by JD Home Delivery’s “Icy Season”, Chongqing was selected as one of the Top 10 cities with the most active consumption at night (18:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m.) during the promotion period, along with Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Shanghai, Foshan, Nanjing and Nanning.

In terms of geographical distribution, only 2 northern cities, Beijing and Xi’an, are among the top 10 cities in the country in terms of night-time consumption, while the rest are in the south. Night-time consumption in southern cities is overall more active than in northern cities, and three dynamic regions have been formed: the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and Sichuan and Chongqing. In terms of city development levels, the night-time economy in third- and fourth-tier cities is also rising rapidly: in cities such as Yantai in Shandong, Anqing in Anhui, Bazhong in Sichuan, Baotou in Inner Mongolia, Shantou in Guangdong and Yongzhou in Hunan, night-time consumption has increased by more than six times compared to last year.

The data shows that during the promotion period from July 10 to 18, the whole range of products, including frozen food, wine and beverages, fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, grain and oil, medicine and protection, personal care and beauty, mobile phones and accessories, home cleaning, mother and baby products, home appliances, etc., were sold online. Among the summer cooling products, sales of freshly squeezed juices were 10 times higher than the same period last year, while sales of women’s sun protection clothing, laundry gel and swimming products were 10 times, 9.8 times and 12.6 times higher respectively.

In the night-time top-selling categories, low-temperature milk, frozen food, beer, carbonated drinks and functional drinks were among the top 20 hot-selling items, while cooking oil, tissues and wipes, rice, fruit and personal care products were also on the list. On the one hand, the Icy Season promotion coincided with the Euro 2020 final and the overall heat of the sporting event in July, which fueled the night-time food economy. On the other hand, it also shows that more and more consumers are accustomed to instant consumption after work, on their way home and at night for leisure and entertainment, where all their daily needs, from dinner ingredients to all kinds of necessities, can be met online, with instant access to everything they need.
