Israel former FM Lieberman to return to cabinet after acquittal

JERUSALEM, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Avigdor Lieberman, former Israeli foreign minister who was forced to resign amid fraud charges, is on his way back to the Israeli cabinet following his acquittal on Wednesday morning.

Lieberman, an outspoken, hawkish politician and one of the major figures in Israeli politics and a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is set to resume his previous role as Foreign Minister in the very near future.

Following his acquittal on charges of fraud and breach of trust, Netanyahu called Lieberman and congratulated him.

"I congratulate you on your unanimous acquittal and am pleased that you are returning to the government," Netanyahu said, according to a press release from the Prime Minister's Office.

"We will continue to work together for the good of Israel," he added.

Although Netanyahu did not clearly state what position Lieberman will assume, he has been keeping the foreign ministry portfolio for him since winning re-elections in January.

"This chapter is now behind me. I am focusing on the challenges ahead," Lieberman said following his verdict.

It is yet to be seen what would be the impact of Lieberman's return to the position, specifically regarding the peace talks with the Palestinians, on which Lieberman had repeatedly shown his skepticism.

Lieberman, from the Yisrael Beytenu Party (Israel is our home) Party, has been considered an extreme right-wing marker of Netanyahu's government and caught in several altercations with the international community.

One of the challenges ahead for him will be the European Union' s ban, starting from January 2014, on the Israeli settlements which would preclude any agreements from being implemented in territories annexed by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War.

Lieberman was charged with fraud and breach of trust regarding a questionable appointment of Ze'Ev Ben Aryeh, Israel's former ambassador to Belarus.
